Police crack 'hijacking syndicate'

Six suspects will appear in the Lenasia Magistrate's Court after police cracked what they believe to be a cross-border hijacking syndicate in Johannesburg.

Ten vehicles, two firearms and R600 000 were recovered over the weekend.


Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says four suspects in Middelburg were found in possession of a stolen BMW. This led them to Lenasia where another two suspects were found in possession of suspected stolen vehicles. 


Naidoo says they are still investigating.

"We are still early in the investigation. The majority of the vehicles were luxury, upmarket vehicles. We are still yet to determine what the intentions were going to be for these vehicles."


He says they expect to make more arrests.


"Police management has put measures in place to deal with these categories of crime and one of the fundamental areas that will help achieve our objectives, is intelligence gathering. The arrests and recovery of these vehicles have been hugely significant to our efforts in curbing crime."
