Police are keeping a close watch on the situation and have contingency plans in place should protests flare up again.

"Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed in Vereeniging, Sharpeville and surrounding areas,” says police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.
There have also been reports that disgruntled taxi drivers plan to disrupt the official Human Rights Day commemorations in Sharpeville.
On Wednesday, fifty people were arrested for public violence after they barricaded roads in the area.
The protestors blocked several roads with vehicles, burning tyres and rocks.
Police couldn’t confirm the reason for the protest but demonstrators took to social media accusing the government of failing to construct appropriate infrastructure for taxis.
