Police hunt illegal miners after security guard is shot and killed

Welkom police have launched a manhunt after a 53-year-old security officer at Phakisa mine was shot and killed on Monday.
Police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng said Erik Khumalo was found in his car with several gunshot wounds at the entrance of Boiketlong Village.
Thakeng said the three male suspects, who were seen at the victim’s vehicle soon after shots were fired, are suspected to be illegal miners.
Thakeng added that no arrests have been made and investigation is ongoing.
A case of murder has been opened.
