The 52-year old Khanyile was gunned down while sitting in a car parked at a shopping centre in Alberton on Saturday.

"A suspect fired multiple shots at him,” says Gauteng police's Mathapelo Peters.

"The suspect is reported to have moved away from the scene, and jumped into a nearby gold Toyota Cressida.

"The motive for the shooting is unclear at this stage.”

Khanyile was the former head of the Eastern Cape Social Development Department.

He was due to appear in court on October 16 on charges of money laundering, fraud and theft relating to a multi-million-rand project in the province.

Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has also expressed her condolences to his family and friends.

"Although the circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear, we believe that the criminal justice system will bring perpetrators of this heinous crime to book,” says the department’s spokesperson Lungi Mtshali.
