Police investigating sexual assault claims at UKZN
Police say they are investigating if a case of sexual assault opened at Alexandra Police Station is linked to the recent protests at UKZN Pietermaritzburg campus.
Earlier today, hundreds of UKZN students at the Maritzburg campus handed over a memorandum of demands to the SAPS - amid allegations of police brutality and the sexual harassment of students, allegedly by officers.
The police's Thulani Zwane says they will look at their memorandum.
"We are also investigating the matter whereby there was a case of sexual assault that was opened. We are going to investigate and see whether it is related to the matter that was reported in the area," he said.
The university's Lesiba Seshoka says they haven't received any complains from students about being injured or sexually abused.

"Procedurally, if it happened on campus, it is us - we are responsible for campus security. But if anyone moves out of campus or goes to some place and gets harassed there - it's not for the university to be commenting on such things," he said.
Meanwhile - students at the Pietermaritzburg Campus say they want police to be held accountable over their alleged conduct there.
According to them, two sexual assault incidents took place on Monday in which officers were involved.
This caused anger amongst the student body - with calls among them to mobilise.
