Police officer to appear in court for teenage kidnapping

Police in Free State have confirmed the arrest of a 42-year-old police officer in connection with the alleged abduction of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi.

Baukudi was allegedly kidnapped last Thursday by two men driving a Toyota Hilux bakkie purporting to be police officers.
The incident was reported to police by his caretaker, Daniel Malebatso, who had been driving with the teenager after picking him up from school.
Malebatso told police that the bakkie the suspects were travelling in was fitted with blue lights on the grill and what looked like a police radio inside.
The suspects told them that their car was linked to drug deliveries and ordered them to drive to the Park Road Police Station.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Motantsi Makhele says the sergeant will be charged in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court with kidnapping, while more charges might be added.
"Though it is not exciting news for us but it is something which you can say that it is breakthrough because our team as we said earlier that they will not only focus externally but they will also focus internally and they managed to pick up this 42-year-old individual who is a sergeant in the South African Police Services and we can confirm that through the process of interrogating and questioning him, and also following some leads, they took a decision that they are going to keep him in custody."
