Police officer killed in Durban shooting
Updated | By Martine van der Walt Ehlers
KwaZulu Natal police are investigating the circumstances surrouding the deadly shooting of a constable along the M19.
The Durban cop and other officers were patrolling the road that runs between Reservoir Hills and Pinetown when they saw a vehicle parked alongside the road - with its hazard lights on - and decided to investigate.
"As the constable approached the vehicle, an occupant of the vehicle shot and fatally wounded the officer", explains spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), Vish Naidoo.
"The suspect fled from the scene but handed himself over at the Sydenham police station, where he currently detained on a charge of murder.
Emergency services say the constable - who was a member of the Sydenham Crime Prevention Unit - had been shot multiple times.
A team comprising members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) and forensic experts have been tasked to investigate the murder.
The National Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Khehla John Sitole has meanwhile expressed his deepest condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the fallen constable.
"I have also tasked the Acting Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi to ensure that this case be investigated thoroughly", says General Sitole.
