Police probing student's death

Police are investigating a case of murder after a 21-year-old student was shot and killed during the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to student activist, Funzani Mutsila they received information that a student hosted a party on Friday night. Security then attempted to shut down the party, which was held  at student accommodation off campus.


"The private security officer told them that the party is over and that the students should return to their residences," Mutsila said.


She said that one of the students resisted and refused to leave the party.


"He got beaten up and ran away, where after the security officers shot at him. He was shot twice in the back," she said.

According to Mutsila students have been urged to refrain from posting pictures of the incident.


"Witnesses were told they shouldn't post any pictures on social media or share any information with anyone," she said.


Meanwhile police say they are investigating the allegations that the student was killed by a security guard.


Police say the incident took place at private student accommodation not affiliated with the University of Johannesburg.


The security guard who allegedly shot and killed the student fled after the incident and police have launched a manhunt for him.
