Service delivery protest in Stutterheim, Eastern Cape has left one person dead on Tuesday.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation into the shooting by police.
IPID's Spokesman, Moses Dlamini, says when police arrived at the scene they were assaulted.
"A police vehicle was also pelted with stones and the police shot in the direction of the protestors. One male was shot in the head, he was taken to the hospital and is in a critical condition," says Dlamini.
He says a case of attempted murder has been opened.
