Police to start scrutinising controversial new gun bill
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The South African Police Services (SAPS) will begin the process of scrutinising the more than 120 000 written submission on the Arms Control Amendment Bill.
Monday marked the last day in which South Africans could have their say regarding the bill.
Spokesperson Lirandzu Themba says the process will include comments, which is aimed at assisting in strengthening the bill.

“Now the process to scrutinise the 120 000 plus comments that have been received is underway. These will include comments that can assist in strengthening the bill and as a process unfolds it will also see the bill being reviewed taking into consideration the useful comments that will mould the firearms controls act before being approved by the Ministry of Police.”
The proposed law seeks to criminalise the possession of firearms for self-defence purposes.
However, the proposed new law has been slammed by parties such as the Democratic Alliance (DA) and organisations such as AgriSA and the FW de Klerk Foundation.
