Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane were shot and killed in an apparent hit outside a popular Durban restaurant in February.

No arrests have been made, but police have assured the public that they are hot on the heels of the assailants.

In September, the KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said they had identified the suspects, the cars, and the weapon that was used in the crime.

At the time, Mkhwanazi said they were just waiting to get the green light from the National Prosecuting Authority to effect the arrests.

During the media briefing on the sidelines of the African National Congress national executive committee in Boksburg on Monday, Cele pleaded for patience from the public.

“We found the cars that were used to attack and withdraw, we found the gun, we’ve identified those people. The fear with the AKA case is that it’s a high-profile case. So, the team says when they act, they want to act on a solid thing.”

Cele said that he’s confident that police had cracked the case, adding that they were being cautious in their approach to avoid a repeat of the Senzo Meyiwa murder case.

“The fact that those cars that dropped these guys off and picked them up, and the gun has been found to be the proper gun ballistically – I think we are very much on course with that case of AKA.”

The minister had in the past told the public that police had a “watertight” case against the men accused of killing the soccer star in 2013, however, a decade later no one has been prosecuted.

The trial of five men accused of killing Meyiwa at his then-girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s house in Vosloorus, has been marred by controversy and delays.
