Political killings ‘direct attack’ on democracy - SALGA
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The chairperson of the South African Local Government Association in KZN, Thami Ntuli, says the rise in political killings is a direct attack on democracy.
SALGA on Wednesday briefed the media about its concerns over a spate of killings in the province recently.
KZN chair Thami Ntuli said it's alarming that no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of four councillors over the past month.
He said a few cases have made it to court while others have turned into cold cases.
“All these acts of political killings should be viewed as a direct attack on our democratic system. They are meant to weaken and render them ineffective. These killers and their handlers have turned politicians into sitting ducks, and they have instilled fear into municipal workers who dare stand up when they see acts of corruption.
“The sudden surge in political killings, just when we are a month away from the elections is worrying. What is increasing our worry as SALGA in KZN is (the province) is a heavily contested terrain politically and the province has a terrible history of black-on-black violence.”
