President Cyril Ramaphosa announced an increase of 3% last week, around half of the current inflation rate.

The increase includes members of the executive, premiers and their MEC's, judges, traditional healers and chapter nine institutions.

The recommendations were made by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office-Bearers.

But Cosatu’s Sizwe Pamla says the increase is a slap in the face of government workers.

"There has been a discussion in this country about the affordability of the basic income grant. There has been struggles in when it comes in paying the R350 unemployment grant that is currently in place.

“To wake up and hear that politicians are paying themselves, its a bad increase in the face of poverty where we have inflation, rising cost of living. It is really disappointing. What we expected is that the president needed to reject this.”
