Popcru unhappy with Malema ‘threats’ against police

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) has called on Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader Julius Malema to retract remarks he made over the weekend.

Speaking during an EFF community meeting in Mohokare in the Free State on Sunday, Malema made what the unions believes to be anti-police remarks.

“If South African police want a fight they must declare it, we will treat them the same way we treated them in the ’80s,” he said.

It is believed that he was referring to the clashed between the EFF and the police during an anti-racism march in Brackenfell on Friday.

The union’s spokesperson Richard Mamabolo says Malema’s remarks are disappointing and irresponsible.

“We are quite discouraged by such utterances, especially from a public figure like Julius Malema. We think they are quite irresponsible and of course, these are obviously not only for police but also their families because he actually says they should be attacked where they stay.

“It is really irresponsible on his part. We think he must retract his statement because it creates a lot of challenges for our members in blue who are committed to serve the people of South Africa.”

Mamabolo says Malema should work with the police rather than making threats against hard-working officers.

“We think that EFF, or rather Malema’s input, will do justice when we have such people as him, public figures, and actually adding their voice towards encouraging people to work with police than taking an alternative route.

“We will be definitely be engaging with the SAPS and we hope that the EFF and South Africans be part of the solutions and not part of challenges that the police have in the country.”
