Possible strike at Implats
Updated | By Neo Leeuw
Amcu will consult its members on a possible strike after it received a certificate to strike at Impala Platinum when wage negotiations deadlocked, the union said on Friday.

"I cannot say there is a possible strike, but we received a certificate to strike after we deadlocked on negotiations," said Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) treasurer, Jimmy Gama.
"We will be speaking to our members on Monday to discuss the way forward."
Amcu was demanding a basic salary of R12,500 a month for underground workers and R11,500 for surface workers, with benefits, he said.
In a statement on Friday, Impala said it had been engaged in a mediation process with Amcu facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA).
"Despite progress in many areas, the parties still remain in deadlock with respect to wages and other conditions of employment," it said.
"Impala has offered to increase the minimum guaranteed remuneration of lower category workers by eight percent in the first year (being 2014)and seven percent in the following two years."
The increase meant the minimum guaranteed remuneration for entry evel employees -- basic wage, holiday allowances, accommodation allowance and pension contribution -- would increase from R7996 to R9889 a month for surface workers.
For underground workers it would increase from R8697 to R10,756.
These numbers excluded variable incentive payments like production and safety bonuses as well as other employment benefits such as shift allowances, medical contributions, housing allowances and overtime payments that would increase salaries even more.
"Impala believes that this offer is fair and appropriate in the current environment where levels of profitability remain under severe pressure as a result of the escalating cost-base and depressed global markets," the company said.
The strike certificate required Amcu to give the mine 48 hours notice before embarking on strike action.
Implats said it remained committed to further engagement and remained resolute in their efforts to find a solution that would also secure the sustainability of the business and preserve jobs as best as possible.
"Impala has taken all reasonable measures to prepare for a possible wage strike, specifically to ensure the safety of all employees and is in the process of communicating the wage offer to employees.
"The company is still hopeful that it will be able to secure an agreement in the interest of all stakeholders," it said.
