Possible taxi strike in Tshwane on Monday
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
Tshwane Metro Police officers will be deployed on Monday morning amid the possibility of an unprotected taxi strike.
According to TMPD, the taxi drivers plan to gather in various areas including Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa, Atteridgeville, Mamelodi and Centurion, after which they plan to proceed to the Pretoria CBD.
TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba says this is the same group that led a march to the mayor's office.
"Now they don't want to march to Tshwane house, they want to hand the memorandum to the presidency," explains Mahamba.
"Tshwane Metro Police Department would like to assure the community that, should the planned action proceed, Metro Police officers and other law enforcement agencies are ready to deal with the protest action," reads a statement by TMPD.
The march has not been approved as it fails to meet the necessary criteria.
Taxi owners have meanwhile distanced themselves from the march and assured their taxi's will be operational.
