Power restored after fire in Alexandra
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
City power has restored power to areas affected by a fire that erupted at the Stjwetla informal settlement in Alexandra on Tuesday afternoon.
City power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says investigations into the fire are still underway, with initial reports suggesting that the fire started when a City Power electricity pylon had collapsed onto a number of shacks.
“Witnesses and our preliminary investigations suggest otherwise, including that the pylons fell during the fire which started earlier in one shack.”
“As we know by nature and design, pylons are meant to withstand the harshest weather conditions and strongest winds,” says Mangena.
He adds part of the investigation will be looking into whether the pylon structure was weakened or possibly vandalized during the infringement by the shacks around it, making it susceptible to toppling over.
City Power says the estimated cost to the infrastructure could be between three and five million rand, depending on the final assessment.
City Power technicians and investigators are back at the scene to make further assessments
