This came after a report by the Sunday Times that there was a standoff between President Jacob Zuma and the National Treasury about who should lead SAA.

In a statement the presidency denied that there was a rift between President Zuma and Finance Minister Pravin over the SAA board chaired by Zuma’s personal friend Dudu Myeni.

"The rumours and gossip published in today's Sunday Times on the matter are false and regrettably, The Presidency was not asked for comment by the newspaper," the statement from the Presidency read.

Sunday Times reported that Gordhan refused to adhere to SAA’s request for a R5 billion government guarantee, citing government concerns.

In the newspaper report it is alleged that President  Zuma ignored board suggestions from Pravin Gordhan as well as his predecessor Nhlanhla Nene saying that Nene’s proposed board would have replaced Zuma’s personal friend Dudu Myeni as chair.

According to the statement the Presidency and the National Treasury are working well together on this issue and are seeking solutions together.
