The inauguration of the president-elect after the general elections will take place on May 24, the presidency said on Wednesday.

The ceremony would follow the election of the president-elect by Parliament, which was expected to take place on May 21, spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

This would be after the swearing-in of new members of Parliament and the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.

Last year, President Jacob Zuma appointed an inter-ministerial committee to plan for the inauguration.

Acting Minister in the Presidency Nathi Mthethwa said the committee was satisfied with the progress made so far.

"The logistical arrangements are proceeding well and we look forward to an exciting and successful inauguration ceremony," he said.

The inauguration would take place in the Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
