One person has died and 19 others have been injured after the plane they were travelling in crashed in Wonderboom in Pretoria north.

Emergency services were called out to the scene just after 16:00 when the plane was found on fire in a field.

Rudi Storm, who claims to have witnessed the incident, says they noticed the right-hand-side engine was on fire and the plane was flying very low.

"We saw the plane and we heard a thumping sound," adds Storm.

The plane caught on fire shortly after impact with emergency services reportedly extinguishing the flames before being able to get all those on board out of the wreckage.

"Fire services are currently on scene fighting the fire that has broken out in the aircraft," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring told Jacarandafm News.

He later confirmed the fatality and said the injuries ranged from minor to critical.

Video footage shows smoke coming from the wreckage and an emergency services helicopter hovering above the scene.

The Civil Aviation Authority was unwilling to comment on the incident except to say that investigators had been dispatched to the scene.
