The water supply to a number of Pretoria suburbs, including the vicinity of the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital, was restored early on Friday morning, the municipality said.

Spokesman Blessing Manale said the supply had been restored around 2am after a planned water cut on Tuesday.

"The City of Tshwane embarked on a routine water services maintenance programme which resulted in water supply interruptions on [Tuesday]," he said in a statement.

The reconnection was initially scheduled for Wednesday, but was delayed due to technical problems.

Suburbs affected included Muckleneuk, parts of Colbyn, Hatfield, and Bryntirion.

On Thursday, the city managed to restore water in most of the affected suburbs, but Arcadia and Inner City Central remained dry.

"The City of Tshwane services infrastructure opted to deliver water tankers... to all critical centres around Arcadia, mainly the hospitals, embassies, student residences, and high-density residential units and flats."

Manale said that the water services department worked through the night to restore the water supply.

"We once more want to apologise for inconveniences suffered during this situation."

Medi-Clinic confirmed that the supply to the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital, where former president Nelson Mandela is being treated for a lung infection, had been interrupted before the matter was resolved.

"Although we had not been informed by the local municipality in advance about the routine maintenance in the area, we had made arrangements with them to ensure that [the hospital] maintained its emergency water reserves until the municipal water supply was restored last night."
