Privatise Eskom's generation entities: DA
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the government to privatise the embattled state-owned Eskom to address the current spate of power cuts throughout the country.
Eskom has announced on Monday that it will implement stage 4 loadshedding and this will continue into Tuesday.
The embattled power utility says the power cuts are due to a shortage of capacity.
DA Leader Mmusi Maimane's spokesperson, Azola Mboniswa, says President Cyril Ramaphosa cannot distance himself from the collapse at Eskom.
The party has called on the president to take responsibility and corrective measures to ensure that Eskom operates effectively.
"We call on the President to privatise the generation entities of Eskom, allowing for a diverse range of electricity to enter the grid," says Mboniswa.
He adds the party urges Ramaphosa to halt the construction of two power stations and allow Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to come on board to ensure diversity of power providers.
"The current risks happening with Eskom is not a new thing but rather President Ramaphosa should take responsibility for the systematic collapse of Eskom."
He adds the spate of power cuts are also affecting the performance of the economy.
