A police officer who was part of the Western Cape Community Safety and Police Oversight MEC Reagen Allen’s protection detail has shot himself outside a church.

Allen has confirmed that his bodyguard shot himself during a funeral in Elsies River on Saturday morning.
The 44-year-old was attending a burial of an officer who was killed on duty.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says the officer left the church during the service before shooting himself.
“The officer was with the MEC whom he was guarding at the time. He was attending a funeral of another law-enforcement member who was killed two weeks ago on duty.
“The officer went outside of the church and shoot himself, what led to his shooting is still under investigation.”
Allen said he was deeply shocked by the incident.
“I’m deeply shocked and hurt by what transpired. I would like to wish the officer a speedy recovery and I hope will be able to get at the bottom of why this occurred as soon as possible.”
