The probe by the FSB will now also include possible false financial reporting by the food and retailer giant.

Spokesperson Tembisa Marele says the wider scope of the probe relates to financial documents submitted to it by Steinhoff.

"Our investigation is into insider trading in the shares of the company, it¹s not into the company itself. We have now extended our investigation into false reporting. This is in terms of the financial documents submitted to us."
