After safely negotiating the first hour, the Proteas had reached 85/2 with Dean Elgar (37) and Hashim Amla (43) looking in good touch.

But a wild sweep which found the leading edge from Elgar saw the third wicket stand ended on a 76-run partnership. Ravi Ashwin was the bowler to dismiss Elgar.

Amla did not last too much longer when he came down the track, missed and was stumped by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha also off the bowling of Ashwin to leave the tourists on 105/4.

Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman Dane Vilas (1), playing in just his second Test, became the fourth victim for Ashwin as he top-edged the bowler and was caught by Ravindra Jadeja at backward square leg as South Africa were reduced to 107/5.

At the interval, AB de Villiers was unbeaten on 26 with Veron Philander 2 at the other end.
