Protesting pupils block road in Eastern Cape
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
The Department of Education in the Eastern Cape has confirmed that pupils at the Mdeni Senior Secondary School are all back in class following protests.
On Wednesday pupils blocked traffic on the R53 road with chairs and books, demanding the resumption of lessons at the school.
Spokesperson for the department, Mali Mtima, says a contractor who built new classrooms at the school refused to hand over the keys due to non-payment.
"The head of the department spoke to the contractor, as he claimed he was being owned money for his work by the department. The department had an agreement with the contractor to settle the debt," he says.
Mtima says classes have resumed and everything is back to normal.
