Protesting residents shut down Giyani over lack of water

Protesting residents of Giyani barricaded all major leading in and out
of the Limpopo town on Monday.
Disgruntled residents say they have been without clean water for more than a decade.
Spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety Tidimalo Chuene says the angry residents have disrupted services and closed down businesses.
“The town is completely empty due to the total shutdown. From the report we have received - the protesters are only allowing police and emergency vehicles to accessing the town.
“Our law enforcement officers remain on site to assess the situation and so far there are no incidents reported.”
Meanwhile, Minister of Water and Sanitation Senzo Mchunu says government has begun work to solve the water crisis in the area.
“The Giyani Water Project has always been a priority project for the ministry; it is unfortunate and regrettable that it has taken this long to provide the people of Giyani with clean water, but I want to assure the residents that we are hard at work and will see the project to completion.
“We have been in office for just over a year, yet we have managed to do more than what was done in the past three years - that should be an indication of our commitment to seeing this project to finality.”
