Protesters run amok in Braamfontein

At least two vehicles, including one belonging to the SABC, were set alight by protesters, who also stoned a number of vehicles. 

Police fired rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the protesters, who were believed to be unhappy about a curfew imposed by Wits. 

"At this time we don't have any reports of injuries. We just have report of the damage to two vehicles that were set alight and possibly other vehicles, because stones were thrown at vehicles and at the police. The police did respond promptly and arrested nine persons overnight. They will appear in court on Monday," police spokesperson Sally de Beer said.

Some students say the curfew imposed by Wits would make it impossible for them to study for their exams.

"We are being shot at during the day. We are being shot at during the night. Where are we supposed to study?" one student asked.

"Now they are telling that the exams are to be written, the academic programme has to be completed. We are final year students. We also need to graduate, but if you are going to block us from studying, how are we going to write and pass?" another asked.

Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel says the curfew was imposed following several incidents of violence on campus this week.

"The university has an obligation to ensure the safety and security of persons and infrastructure within its precincts and as a result has put in place measures to minimise the present danger," Patel said.

The curfew is in effect from 9:30pm until 6.00am.
