Updated | By Karabo Tebele
Protesting students at
the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) torched a gym and blockaded a
road at the Westville campus in the early hours of Wednesday
morning.
Provincial police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says close to 120 students took to the streets and burnt mattresses and other belongings.
“This morning at 5am, a group of about 120 students from UKZN Westville campus blockaded a road and also set alight a gymnasium and a case of public violence have been opened.”
This led to clashes between students and security.
“No arrests have been made and no injuries reported, police are at the campus monitoring the protest.” says Gwala.
It is alleged that the students are angered by the 15% upfront payment requirement towards their historical debt at the university.
