Protesting students at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) are planning to apply for an urgent interdict against Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib's online referendum.

Wits wants to run a poll to determine whether students and staff want academic activities to resume on 3 October.

Former Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Mcebo Dlamini, says Advocate Dali Mpofu will represent them.

Dlamini said students gathered last night and decided on an alternative to the referendum.

"They then proposed that the University rather call a student assembly or a student parliament where everyone will come and deliberate and the chairperson of council chairs the meeting. Then we vote. Not a referendum where we will vote online where it could be easily manipulated," Dlamini said.

Dlamini said Mpofu will also assist them in laying charges against the government by the end of this week to implement free higher education immediately.

The former SRC president, meanwhile, confirmed that protesting students will march to the Chamber of Mines today.

"The issue of free education is not that of government alone. We are saying the silence of the private sector who are the beneficiaries of graduates is deafening and it can't go unchallenged.
