Protests continue at TUT
Protest action by students continued at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) on Thursday morning, with police firing rubber bullets at the Soshanguve campus to disperse crowds.
TUT management said classes would resume at all campuses on Thursday, after they were again suspended the day before.
Students are adamant, saying they will shut down all campuses until their demand for free higher education is met.
Police spokesperson Sally de Beer said police are monitoring the situation.
"The police calls upon all students, student leaders and other role players to act within the confines of the law at all times and not to contravene the Regulation of Gatherings Act, commit acts of violence or intimidate other persons," she said.
Meanwhile, a strong police presence could be seen at TUT's West Campus this morning.
TUT spokesperson Willa de Ruyter said students were attending classes on all campuses.
"The university is committed to ongoing engagement with student leaders and there have been meetings with SRC over the last couple of weeks. They handed over memoranda with issues and these issues were addressed. As far as institutional issues are concerned, the majority of them has been resolved and it has also been explained to the students that as far as 'Fees Must Fall' is concerned, it's a national issue and we need to engage with the Department of Higher Education and Training," she said.
