Community members took to the streets on Tuesday, accusing the government of not fulfilling the promises it made to residents in the area.

The protests flared up again early on Wednesday morning.

Police fired rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the protesters, who blocked streets with burning tyres and stones.

The protests have since spread to other areas in the south, including Eldorado Park and Lenasia.

Gauteng Civic Association representative Shepard Masiza says no political party will be allowed to campaign in the area ahead of next year's general elections.

"We will try and mobilise all our branches and we don't want them to campaign in our branches. We don't want them to campaign in our branches! Southern Farm is our land, they mustn't campaign with that land because already we've done with the agreement. They must give us 48 000 stands."

The Johannesburg Metro Police's Edna Mamonyane says some of the roads have been reopened but the situation remains volatile.

"At the moment things have calmed down a little bit but we have had splinter groups, especially on the N12, throwing stones at passing motorists."

This is a developing story.

Gauteng police have not been available for comment.
