Public officials in the Waterberg District of Limpopo are said to be stealing food parcels meant for the less privileged.

Alleged incidents of corruption and food looting have been reported around the country, with claims that local councillors are not giving the food to the families most in need.

President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the actions in his address on Tuesday, calling out “the unscrupulous people abusing the distribution of food and other assistance for corrupt ends”.

The PSA’s John Teffo the criminal conduct undermines the efforts by the Limpopo government to alleviate poverty.

"It is well known that the province is approaching an unemployment rate of 40% with most people depending on social grants.

"Many families depend on income from piece jobs, which is now cut off by the lockdown. Children who normally receive meals at schools are also home, which aggravates the food shortage.”

Teffo wants those who are responsible to face the full might of the law.

"Such greed and moral decay cannot be part of South African culture and those found guilty of enriching themselves through fraudulent and illegal means must face the consequences.

"The PSA calls upon the MEC of Social Development to thoroughly investigate this matter and ensure that those implicated face the wrath of the law."
