PSL suspends fixtures amid coronavirus outbreak
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced the suspension of all the Absa Premiership games scheduled for this week due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
PSL chairman Irvin Khoza made the announcement in Johannesburg on Monday.
This means Tuesday’s game between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, Wednesday’s fixture between Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits as well as this coming weekend's round of matches have all been suspended.
The decision to suspend the league follows the declaration of a state of disaster by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday, in which one of the measures was a prohibition on gatherings of 100 or more people.
Some 12 000 tickets have already been sold for the game between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

The 55-year-old former South Africa forward and coach was thrilled that his side reached the last four before a capacity 12,000 crowd and kept alive hopes of a domestic treble. Former African champions Sundowns lifted the League Cup earlier in the 2019/2020 season and are second in the league, four points behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs with a match in hand.
Another meeting will be held on Thursday to discuss the possible suspension of the league.
“On Thursday, March 19, there will be a meeting to discuss the challenges faced by the country and unfolding in other parts of the world. We decided to also discontinue the Diski Challenge immediately,” said Khoza.
Khoza vowed to make a decision that is in the best interest of the country.
