Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga’s announced plans to introduce a three-stream curriculum after the completion of Grade 9 at the national conference of the South African Democratic Teachers Union in Nasrec on Thursday.

FEDSAS CEO Paul Colditz believes learners should not be forced to pursue a specific career.

“It is a positive development if it is linked to the so-called three-spring model of education.”

He believes providing alternatives for school-goers is a progressive step for South African education.

“At the moment 90% of our learners have to do an academic matric, but the intention is to bring back technical and vocational training. We believe that 50% of learners should not try pursue an academic career but rather focus on technical or so-called vocational training.”
