Quiet at Newclare train station on Tuesday

"It is quiet today, no one is there. Overnight it was quiet also," said police spokesman Warrant Officer Jerbes de Bruyn.

 

"Police are there still monitoring."

 

On Monday a man was killed and two buildings were torched by protesters from the Kathrada Park informal settlement, who were complaining about the lack of RDP houses.

 

De Bruyn said one protester was injured when he was accidentally hit with a brick by another protester.

 

He, however, could not confirm an update by the Passenger Rail Agency of SA that six others were injured.

 

Prasa spokesman Moffet Mofokeng told Sapa one commuter had been injured in the eye on Monday, while five security personnel were injured during an altercation with the protesters.

 

The train service between Randfontein and Johannesburg was suspended on Monday.

 

"The railway line has been shut down until after we are satisfied about the safety of passengers," said Mofokeng.

 

"This morning [Tuesday] our team is going there to do some further assessments to check the damage and see when the line would be usable."

 

De Bruyn said "a few" protesters had been arrested for public violence.

 

"It's difficult to give the number of arrests because some of them were released."
