R185m needed to fix KZN health facilities - Simelane
The repair bill to fix and restore 84 health facilities affected by the torrential rains is sitting at R185 million.
KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane and other health officials visited a number of affected facilities in eThekwini on Tuesday.
"When we quantify the amount of damage so far, we believe that it's just above R185 million," said Simelane.
"We have concluded so its not a conclusive number because as we continue working we are discovering new things that needs to be fixed."
The number of people who died in the floods has climbed to 448.
The health team conducted inspections at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital which's been dealing with water shortages.
Simelane said mobile clinics will be deployed to community halls, churches and centres where residents affected by the floods have been accommodated.
"We are doing this all over eThekwini, Ilembe and all the other affected areas. The intention is to provide whatever health services that's needed by community and bring medication for chronic patients."
Meanwhile, a total of 318 autopsies have now been conducted, with 58 still outstanding.
Communities have been encouraged to come forward and identify the remains of their loved ones.
