A video, of a black man being assaulted by the two men, has sparked racial tensions in Machadodorp.

Residents claim the assault was racially motivated.

The video has since spread like wildfire and has led to violence erupting in the small town.

Several incidents of damage to property have been reported with a foreign national’s shop also looted and set alight.

Police say the two men have been released on bail following a brief appearance in the Belfast Magistrate's Court on Friday.

They face two counts of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“The case was postponed to 28 September and the two suspects have been granted R500 bail each,” says spokesperson Leonard Hlathi.

Residents took to the streets blocking several streets as the pair appeared in court.

The motive behind the attack is being investigated.
