Arguments for, and against, legalising the trade in rhino horn in South Africa have many tempers flaring, and it remains an unresolved conflicting issue.
More than two rhinos are killed every day, with the number dead now over 700 just this year alone.
Whilst the official stance is that the rhino population can still withstand the scourge for years to come it is the brutality of the attacks, and the fact that poachers are still getting away with it, that is of concern.
Karin Labuschagne takes a look at the gruesome crime.
