Ramaphosa: 488 suspects arrested for cop killings in 5 years
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday said 488 suspects have been arrested since 2018 in connection with the killing of police officers.
Thirty-four cops have been killed over the past three months.
Ramaphosa addressed the families of the police officers and reservists who lost their lives in the line of duty at the annual South African Police Service Commemoration Day.
He said the nine people who have been convicted for police killings have all been slapped with life sentences.
"SAPS management needs to deepen efforts to improve the wellness of our police officers," Ramaphosa said.
"Police must be taken care of. Communities need to speak out against police killings. The life of police officers should be valued not just by their colleagues, but everyone who lives in our country."
