The meeting comes after the committee staged several protests demanding a resolution to various issues affecting the township, north of Johannesburg.

The complaints include the building of illegal structures and the city’s failure to keep the area clean.

On Monday, scores of residents marched to the city’s regional offices in Sandton in to hand over a memorandum of demands to mayor Herman Mashaba.

Mashaba could not receive the memorandum and sent the city manager Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni to address the protestors.

This lead to unhappiness among protestors, who said they were no longer interested in Mashaba and instead want President Cyril Ramaphosa to go to the area to address their issues.

Makhura accepted the memorandum of demands from the committee on Tuesday.

“I know that the president will be in Alexandra and I have assured the committee that I’m going to brief the president on all their issues,” he said.

President Ramaphosa is expected to visit Alex on Thursday.

Makhura dismissed claims that the ANC is behind the unrest, saying the issues raised by #AlexShutDown has nothing to do with upcoming elections.

“Any accusation of the ANC is just malicious accusation… the ANC exist in every community.”

Makhura confirmed that he is willing to work with Mashaba to address the issues facing Alexandra.

He also urged law enforcement to enforce bylaws of the city and remove illegal structures.
