IEC clears all 29 ANC party candidates

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has dismissed objections raised against 29 national and provincial candidates on the ANC’s party lists for the upcoming elections.
The commission briefed the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday, saying it received 52 objections against candidates from 10 political parties.
The ANC has sent the name of candidates who have brought the party into disrepute to its integrity committee as part of its internal process to finalise its election lists.
The Black First Land First (BLF) movement received 19 objections, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) 13, the Democratic Alliance 4 and the Land Party 4 each and 1 for the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), African Independent Congress (AIC), Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC), African Content Movement (ACM) and the Alliance for Transformation for All (ATA).
"After deliberating, the commission resolved to uphold one objection by the PAC against its own candidate Mr. Seropane Alton Senyane Phethi. This candidate was sentenced on 7 June 2016 to 18 months imprisonment without the option of a fine. This disqualifies him from holding elected office to the National Assembly or Provincial Legislature," said IEC head Mosotho Moepya.
Moepya says the other objections are rejected because they failed to meet the constitutional and statutory criteria of the IEC and most relied on unproven allegations.
Moepya said the IEC was not obligated to make public the contents of the allegations.
Those who have raised objections have until the April 11 to appeal.
