Ramaphosa to address nation on Sunday amid emergence of new variant, calls for harsher lockdown

South Africans may be in for stricter lockdown regulations when President Cyril Ramaphosa takes to the podium to address the nation on Sunday evening.

Ramaphosa’s address will come in the wake of news of a new variant identified in SA, prompting calls for tighter regulations.
Gauteng is currently the country’s Covid epicentre.
The province’s healthcare sector has shown signs of buckling under the pressure, sparking fears of unmanageable caseloads.
According to the country’s health officials, the Delta variant has be found be behind the bulk on new infections.
Following the latest announcement, the Ministerial Advisory Committee wants government to clamp down on movement.
Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation at 8pm.
