The ANC is under severe pressure in the run-up to the 2024 general elections as the country continues to battle load shedding, crime, fraud and erratic water supply.

Last month, the DA accused the government of turning South Africa into a “state of dependency”.

“Our detractors have shown a lack of appreciation of what democracy has achieved under the ANC,” Ramaphosa told the ANC's 2019 manifesto review wrap-up event in Alberton on Friday.

“They have resorted to distortions of facts and lies, the biggest being that nothing has happened since 1994 and that apartheid was even better than what we are going through now, and we all know that that’s a blatant lie.”

Ramaphosa said while it has not all been smooth sailing, a lot of progress has been made in delivering services to residents.

“On the side of delivering to our people, we have basically given our people a number of assets like housing. We are also giving out land our people are able to farm, small-scale farmers. We’ve rolled out electricity much as we are going through challenges. 93% of South Africans have access to electricity and that in itself is a phenomenal achievement”.

“So, of course, stating these successes is not a denial of the fact that there have not been setbacks and challenges. Of course, we have had setbacks and challenges. Those who do not have setbacks and challenges are those who sit on the sidelines and criticise, armchair critics are those who have never gotten into the arena where they have to do things for our people.”
