“It must outline those measures we must undertake to make a dramatic and lasting change in the lives of our people."

He said despite the party’s current predicament, there has been notable achievements since the dawn of democracy.

"Since then, as a country, we have made important progress in giving effect to the vision of our guiding lodestar document, the Freedom Charter. Despite the severe challenges we now confront, we have the ability, as the African National Congress, to turn things around."

SACP general-secretary Solly Mapaila, in his party’s message of support, said the conference should rescue the ANC from its crisis.

"This policy conference has a mammoth task to rescue the ANC from the crisis it faces, both internal and external crisis. Crisis of confidence by our people that have over the years relied on this movement to carry out the aspirations of their liberation struggle.

Cosatu president Zingiswa Losi also condemned the ANC for not taking the plight of workers seriously by failing to pay its own staff their salaries.

"We need to see an ANC which pays its employees in full and on time. Cosatu affirms its solidarity with ANC workers who have gone through painful hardship over the past few years. Outside this conference, we have Cosatu members who are SARS employees picketing.”

The conference is expected to conclude on Sunday.
