Ramaphosa calls ‘family meeting’ for Sunday evening
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation at 8pm on Sunday.
The address follows a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council, the President’s Coordinating Council and Cabinet.
Ramaphosa’s address is expected to give an update on the government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“As South Africa rolls out its Covid–19 vaccination programme, government and social partners are continuously monitoring infection, treatment and patient recovery rates as well as compliance with health regulations and other prevention measures,” said the presidency in a statement.
Two weeks ago, Ramaphosa announced a 14-day adjusted level 4 lockdown with more restrictions on the sale of alcohol and the closure of restaurants.
With infections showing no signs of slowing down, there is an expectation that level 4 would be extended.
On Saturday evening, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said that 21 610 new coronavirus cases had been recorded in the latest reporting period.
