President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on South Africans come together as the world marks what would have been late president Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday.

"Let us all lend a hand to build the South Africa we dream of," Ramaphosa said in a video message.

A number of social campaigns have been announced to mark the centenary celebrations.

Scores of bikers gathered in Cape Town on Saturday morning for the annual Bikers for Mandela campaign - led by the late statesman's former assistant Zelda la Grange.

Ramaphosa called on South Africans to make a meaningful contribution on International Nelson Mandela day this week.

"Let us join hands with one another to affirm our common commitment to honour Madiba's memory by building a nation that is united in its diversity."
