Ramaphosa confirmed the deployment in the National Assembly during a question and answer session on Thursday.

The president said the deployment is an extension of Operation Prosper, which has been active in the protection of Eskom power stations faced by sabotage and criminal activities.

The 880 South African National Defence Force members will also help police tackle construction mafias and illegal mining.

The deployment will cost tax payers almost R111 million.

"Recently, I wrote to the Speaker of the National Assembly as well as the chair of the National Council of Provinces, informing them I am extending the deployment of almost 900 soldiers to work with the police when it comes to safeguarding public infrastructure in our country and performing other tasks such as having to deal with brazen acts of criminals such as in construction as well as illegal mining.

"We already see that the support they lend to the police is quite invaluable, and it is appreciated not only by the police but by the citizens. Whenever there are safety and security challenges they have always asked for soldier to support the police."

The deployment is effective from 18 October to 31 March 2024.
