Ramaphosa described the 2019 elections as a new dawn for South Africa.

"The response of our people to voting is just amazing. The nation and our people are energised to cast their vote and they can see that with their vote, they are heralding a new dawn. A new beginning. A period of renewal and it's also a period of hope."

Accompanied by his wife Dr Tshepo Motsepe, Ramaphosa said the atmosphere in Chiawelo was much like that of 1994.

"This is a vote that reminds us of 1994.

"There's a great vibe and it's vibe for democracy."

During his address to the public after casting his vote, Ramaphosa reiterated that the African National Congress (ANC) had made mistakes but vowed to make amends.

"Because we started deviating from the mandate that our people gave us, corruption got in the way, patronage got into the way... we now now what our weaknesses are.

"We've made mistakes but we are sorry about those mistakes and we are saying our people should reinvest their confidence in us."
