Ramaphosa: Give authorities space to probe Mapisa-Nqakula
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa insists that relevant institutions must be permitted to probe corruption accusations against National Assembly speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.
Mapisa-Nqakula stands accused of receiving bribes from an army contractor during her time as the defense minister.
She has since filed for a court interdict against her possible arrest in the corruption probe.
This comes after the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate raided her Johannesburg home last week.
Ramaphosa was speaking during ANC's election campaign in the Eastern Cape on Saturday, he said the rule of law must be upheld.
"We have a process, world geared and independent institutions, and in the end, we must rely on their institutions to do their work, and when we give them space and the opportunity to do their work, then we will be successful."
"The speaker said she is cooperating, and that in itself must say something that we are dealing with allegations that have been made, and from a governance point of view, and now she has taken a special leave, and the process must then unfold."
"It is known that when it reaches a particular point certain actions need to be taken, there is no running away from that and the matter is being handled Let give the institutions the space to handle this matter."
"I am certain that the rule of law will prevail, let's allow that to happen," he added
